Formula Student Team Donate Plymouth to Silverstone: Backing our Formula Students Formula Student is a world-renowned engineering competition run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), where students design, build, and race a single-seat car. It is about much more than speed; it challenges students to demonstrate innovation, teamwork, problem-solving and future-ready engineering skills. The University of Plymouth Formula Student Team is an extra-curricular initiative run by students, with support from both the University and the Students’ Union. The team will compete in the Concept Class in July 2026 before progressing to the Internal Combustion (IC) Class in summer 2027. To achieve this ambition, they need your support. The team brings together students from a wide range of disciplines, including mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, biomedical science, international relations and photography. Diverse in their backgrounds but united by a shared passion for motorsport, they are working together to create something extraordinary from the ground up. Collaboration, innovation and hands-on learning are at the heart of everything they do. What They Need To make their dream of competing at Silverstone a reality, the team needs to raise £35,000. Thanks to generous early support, they have already raised £7,000. They now need to raise the remaining £28,000 to complete the car and compete in Formula Student. Breakdown of Remaining Costs £12,000 – materials and components required to complete the vehicle build, including tyres, wheels and other essential parts. £8,000 – competition entry fees, vehicle and student transport, and accommodation during the event. £5,600 – driver training, safety equipment and protective clothing, including a helmet, race suit, gloves, boots, harness and restraint systems. £2,400 – specialist tools, consumables, lubricants and workshop supplies. Why Your Support Matters This project is about far more than building a racing car. It provides students with a unique opportunity to apply their learning in a real-world environment, developing the practical skills, confidence and experience that will shape their future careers. Every donation helps the team to: Develop hands-on engineering and technical expertise. Gain experience of project delivery and team-based problem-solving. Collaborate across disciplines. Represent the University of Plymouth on a national stage. Build skills and experience that will support their future careers.
